The Problem
Despite the growing movement to “go green” and shop natural and organic, our food systems are breaking down. Prices for local sustainably grown food are rising while real wages have plummeted in the past few decades. Meanwhile, a third of the US food supply is wasted, often due to traveling thousands of miles. Food waste is the second highest component of landfills, and in turn the largest source of methane emissions. Add in the caloric needs of a growing population and the agricultural challenges posed by climate change, and it becomes undeniably clear. If we’re to ensure a prosperous tomorrow, we have to start making changes to the way we grow food today.
Our Solution – Sustainable Agriculture
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a soil-less environment using only water and fertilizer. The application of hydroponics is wide, as hydroponic growth environments can be indoors or outdoors, and can therefore be controlled independently of seasonal constraints of traditional soil planting. Hydroponics offers year-round growing solutions for individual urban hobbyist farmers, to large commercial farmers, and even to NASA in exploration of viable life solutions on other planets. Undoubtedly, hydroponics is a key solution to climate change challenges the world will face in coming years.
